Last year I thought it would be a nice idea to plant some strawberries in one of our raised beds. I order 25 plants of Gurney’s Fort Laramie strawberry.
What a bummer it was to read the directions and find that for the first year I was supposed to pick off all the blossoms from June to July. This meant we got a grand total of six strawberries last year.
This morning, after picking a bowlful I can attest that it was worth the wait! These are tender, delicate little berries that you will never find in a supermarket. Their flavor is incredible, sweet and tart and full to bursting.
If you’re thinking about planting strawberries yourself, here are a few things to consider:
- As I mentioned, you will need to forgo a crop the first year, in order for the roots to be established nice and strong.
- You may need to provide some protection from critters. I haven’t looked into this much yet, but there’s something out there that likes to take just one bite out of ripe berries, and leave the rest. Most annoying.
- They spread like crazy. A raised bed is ideal because it keeps them contained, but you might as well give them the whole bed. (I had planted the strawberries at the recommended spacing, and thought I’d fill in the remaining space with some leeks and garlic. You can see in the below photo that the leeks and garlic have been thoroughly overtaken.)

I’m off to dice some strawberries into my granola. Enjoy the wallpaper!
